Stellenbosch FC have sealed a big transfer for the upcoming Premier Soccer League season, signing Cameroon international, Junior Awono, as they push for top-flight promotion.
The Siya crew reported in February that the 23-year-old midfield man had become a wanted man in South Africa, with Highlands Park believed to be keen on trying to land his signature at that point in time.
Now, with the 2018/19 season on the horizon, it has been confirmed to the crew that the midfielder, who comes from MTN Elite One championship in Cameroon, has agreed to join the National First Division outfit.
Awono captained Cameroon at the recent CHAN tournament after being given the honour by the head coach, Rigobert Song, and it appears that he will not be taking the next step in his career by making the move to South Africa.
Stellenbosch finished eighth in the NFD last season, but with the help of Awono and any other new signings they complete in the coming weeks, they’ll have hopes of pushing for at least a play-off spot come the end of the new campaign.
The move was confirmed by his agency, WA Sports, who revealed that he’s signed a two-year deal.
